Technology at Jagsonpal

It was the time when everyone went for inventory control system for materials management, Tally for accounting system and sales & distribution system for remote sales management. Subsequently people shifted to MRP, MRP II & ERP systems for elimination of data redundancy & design a transaction system for streamlining the processes. Today, it’s IT department’s role today to take the responsibility of all the individual departments separately and integrate the operations to build a transaction system. Writes Prakash Pradhan, Head-IT at Jagsonpal Pharmaceuticals Ltd

By optimizing the processes in each & every stage whether it’s inventory control of raw materials & packing materials at plant or product warehousing at remote depots, production planning, quality control and sales & distribution,  IT has already made a inroad 12/14 years back with basic computerization of the organizational operations.

It was the time when everyone went for inventory control system for materials management, Tally for accounting system and sales & distribution system for remote sales management. That was the era of disjointed applications to build the MIS systems. Subsequently people shifted to MRP, MRP II & ERP systems for elimination of data redundancy & design a transaction system for streamlining the processes.

Initially computers were used as just data processing machines and evolved gradually to the MIS & DSS systems.  Pre-internet era was still unthinkable. R&D, drug-discovery patents and machines details for procurements, all the activities were undertaken without much information gathering, as compared to being done today.

Whether it’s company’s medical representative visiting a doctor in a remote geographical location , invoicing  from depots to stockists at distant  locations, calculation of sales revenue depot-wise, tracking of samples MR wise, expiry of products at depot etc, all the operations are unthinkable without the help of IT department. EDP department of earlier years have been transformed to IT & systems department.

It’s IT department’s role today to take the responsibility of all the individual department separately and integrate the operations to build a transaction system. In totality no other functional head understands the all operations of different Departments other than IT &  management. Hence the role of IT is in the process of getting elevated gradually and will become strategic in future.

Being the CIO of Jagsonpal

After spending considerable time as an IT had, I still foresee a lot of hard work is required to make the management understand to build a real decision support system. management is still only interested in MIS reports at the end of the day. Lot of hard work  from bottom to top of the organization is required to make people understand the importance of IT, complete realization of the need of aligning IT with business is the need of the hour. Hence the word ‘CIO’ is making an inroad.

Obviously, I as a CIO, not yet become to the absolute sense, but yet to evolve to make the management understand the technology in business perspective. Ultimately, technology has to deliver to business for hand in hand growth of the organization. Traditional organization like us, has all functional heads sitting in their domains since last twenty or thirty years, running their operations in their own ways. Bringing IT deployment at this juncture will be a paradigm shift. Change management at this juncture is also very crucial. Hence the CIO’s responsibilities have evolved & changed from time to time.

The future roadmap

Building the IT roadmap of the organization in which deployment of ERP shall be the Priority. Following that solutions like CRM,VOIP & BI will be deployed & journey to Make a dashboard to terminate each & every process from bottom-line.
